Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson confirmed around the Extended Look that Jason and Lucia's romance is an actual gameplay system, tracked separately from criminal reputation. Players keep the relationship healthy by spending time together outside missions — exploring the open world, playing pool or mini-golf, kayaking, or pulling store and bank robberies as a pair. Ignoring your partner's texts, even mundane ones about locking up the house, can damage it. The story keeps the two together for most of the plot regardless, and Nelson said players who don't want the romance thread can opt out of the deeper relationship mechanics.
