Open-source PS5 emulation took off in 2026. Here's where the main projects stood in late October — and what that means for GTA 6.
The leading open-source PS5 emulators are SharpEmu, KytyPS5 and PS5PCEM, all free on GitHub. They can run some PS5 games, but they are experimental and none can run GTA 6. The game isn't out, and there's no sign it will run on them anytime soon.
Built from scratch and focused on hardware accuracy. Version 0.0.5-nexus (early October 2026) brought performance patches for Demon's Souls and Astro Bot, a GTA V shader fix and HDR output. Its own summary in mid-October counted 61 of 97 tested games reaching gameplay, 42 rated playable.
A heavily modified fork of the Kyty emulator with several builds a day. Its community compatibility list showed 167 of 327 titles reaching gameplay in mid-October 2026, up from 154 of 302 on October 10.
Early research project. Version 0.3.4 (October 2026) added font rendering and broader RDNA2 shader support.
No. GTA 6 is not released yet, and no emulator has shown it running. Large open-world games are among the hardest titles for emulators to handle.
Emulator software itself is generally legal. Downloading games or system files you don't own is not. These projects say they distribute no games or firmware.
SharpEmu and KytyPS5 are the most active open-source projects, and AnyPS5 is a newer one gaining contributors. All are experimental, and big releases still don't run at full speed.
Partly. SharpEmu added a GTA V shader fix in October 2026, and AnyPS5 reaches GTA V's menus, but neither has shown full gameplay.
